IL-21, is a kind of Type I Cytokine, highly homogeneous with IL-2, IL-4, IL-15, etc, sharing γ c receptor subunit and cytokine specific receptor Alpha subunit with IL-7 and IL-9. In vivo IL-21 is produced by activated CD4+T cells and has various bioactivities, stimulating CD4+ and CD8+T cell proliferation and NK cell toxicity without triggering activation-induced apoptosis. Although the mechanism of IL-21 in Th1/Th2 differentiation is not clear yet, IL-21 plays an important role in humoral immunity and regulating natural/acquired immunity. Due to the important function of IL-21 in enhancing the proliferation and differentiation of antigen specific T cells in vitro, it has been more and more widely applied in immune cell therapy.
